Pear Cranberry Relish

Until I had Thanksgiving with another family, I never realized how much cranberry dishes were characteristic of New England. Sure, this family had canned jellied cranberry, but I was used to having at least three or four other cranberry options. By far the favorite was my mom's pear cranberry relish, a tangy and refreshing dish that makes an excellent side to many meals. Try it once and you may want to include it at your next holiday celebration!

The ingredients are simple (and so is the prep): Chunk an orange and pear, and add to a food processor with a bag of cranberries. Add sugar and continue pulsing until finely chopped. That's it! This recipe is easy to adjust to taste - you can vary any of the ingredient amounts to give it more sweetness, tang or citrus flavor.

Recipe

1 orange, peeled

1 (12 oz) bag cranberries

1 pear, cored and cut into large chunks

1/2 cup sugar (more or less to taste)

pinch salt

1. Cut orange into chunks.

2. Add the orange wedges, cranberries, pear chunks, sugar and and salt to a food processor, and pulse until coarsely chopped. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate until serving.
